The purpose of a fringe sketch, according to Future Today Institute Founder Amy Webb, is to create a map of signals that helps you find weak signals and small details about a topic, which brings you to pattern recognition, trend analysis, and eventually strategy development.
Our fringe sketch includes both strong and weak signals, but brought in lesser emphasized disruptions and possibilities, like green data centers and replacing CPUs with GPUS, with respect to bigger trends like ethical concerns surrounding AI, brain-computer interface, cybersecurity, and regulatory measures which are top-of-mind right now. The fringe sketch uncovered the interrelationship between some of these trends, like the link between the expansion of computing capacity, the evolution of quantum computing, and the creation of green data centers which will make computing more efficient and centralize it.
